Top Raleigh Photo Session Locations (Part 1)

One of the most common questions I get when a client sets up their outdoor family session is “What is the best location to use?” That question really depends on the time of year but Raleigh has a great selection of varied outdoor backdrops that work perfectly for family photography! Here are two of my favorites – and I’ll be back with another post soon with some more beautiful Raleigh spots.

North Carolina Museum of Art

The Museum of Art grounds are great year round but especially when the tall grass is still around. They mow it in early Spring usually – so late Spring through November is usually my favorite times of year to shoot sessions here. In Summer they also have a wildflower field which is just beautiful. What makes this location extra special is that you can also do some images by the reflecting pools along the actual museum building. This, along with some natural shots in the tall grass and wildflowers, gives a huge variety of different images in one family session. This location is also one of my absolute favorites for maternity sessions!

Yates Mill

This location is probably one of the most iconic places in Raleigh – and it has got a good reason for that reputation! The big mill building and the waterfall make it extremely recognizable. I love that there are so many different backdrops here – we usually do some in front of the mill building, along the stone pathway, by the waterfall, on the dock over the lake, then head around to the other side of the park to do some pictures at the big bridge and then finish at the grassy field. It is a location that requires a lot of walking to hit all the key areas so keep that in mind when choosing your location.
